FAQ
With just a camera or smartphone, you can capture a high-quality passport photo right from home. Stand in front of a plain white wall, keep your face visible with a neutral expression, and avoid shadows. Make sure the room is well-lit with soft, even lighting, natural daylight near a window is ideal. Since selfies aren’t permitted, use a tripod or ask someone else to take the picture for you. Then simply use our online passport photo editor to crop, resize and fine-tune the background. If printing is needed, use quality paper and correct scaling.
Hair must be neatly groomed and should not cover your eyes, eyebrows, or any part of the face. If you wear your hair down, make sure it doesn’t obscure your face or create shadows. Braids or updos are acceptable as long as they don’t hide facial features. Long bangs that cover your eyes should be pinned back. Your portrait should be clear and unobstructed.
Yes, but only light and natural make up is allowed. Steer clear of heavy foundation, strong contouring, fake lashes, bold lipstick, and shimmery eyeshadow that alters your appearance or adds shine to the face. The goal is to look like yourself without dramatic changes.
No, official requirements state that you must keep a neutral facial expression and avoid showing your teeth. Your mouth should be closed, smiling or frowning is also not permitted. Ensure your eyes are open and fully visible and your facial muscles should be at rest. A slight upturn of the lips is allowed, but not enough to be considered a smile. This ensures accurate face recognition during verification.
Glasses are allowed only if they don’t cause spectacles glare or block any part of your eyes. Sunglasses are not allowed. Reflections, frames, and glare can interfere with biometric data capture. If glasses are essential for medical reasons, make sure the frames are thin and your eyes are fully visible. However to avoid having your photo rejected, it's safest to remove them altogether before taking your picture to meet the standards.
Clear, non-tinted contact lenses are acceptable including corrective ones. The ICA passport photo rules require natural-looking eyes with no visual distortion. Avoid colored or patterned lenses that enlarge or alter your eye shape or colour. Eyes must be fully visible with no red-eye effect.
The dress code is strict: avoid wearing a white shirt or sleeveless top, as they blend into the white background and may result in a rejected photo. Wear solid colours with high contrast, such as navy blue, black, or grey — these are the best colours to wear for passport photos to have contrast with the background. Avoid any clothes with logos or patterns. Religious headwear is only allowed if worn daily for faith reasons.
Earrings, necklace, and other visible accessories are not allowed in Singapore passport photos. Facial piercings should also be removed or made as discreet as possible. Such accessories may block parts of your face or cause unwanted shadows, violating the requirements. When in doubt, remove all jewelry before taking your photo.
Most applications require a photo taken within the last few months. This ensures that your current appearance — including hairstyle, facial hair, and other visible features matches official records. Using an older image may lead to delays or rejection, especially if your appearance has changed. Always check the latest submission method before preparing your photo. It's safest to take a new photo just before applying.
About 1.5 to 2 meters between you and the camera usually works well. Make sure your face fills the frame appropriately without being cropped or stretched. The frame should capture your full head and the top of your shoulders with a small margin above your head. Standing too far back may reduce image quality, especially with lower-resolution cameras. Good focus and sharpness are crucial for biometric verification.
